An entertaining match at Tows with a contrast in styles between the two sides. Casuals came with their sizeable pack intent on a up front battle, the much lighter Tows looking to put the ball into space out wide. The Casuals' tactic was the more effective in the first five minutes, putting together an early surge, their pack picking and driving with close off loads from the tackles punching holes through the desperate awakening defence. Despite some impressive initial tackles from Tyler Aris, Casuals managed to burst over in front of the line for an early 7 points.
Tows struggled initially to gain any possession for a further period, however some strong Tows scrummaging from props Cailan Smith (colts debut) and Ally Haynes turned the pressure onto Casuals and the backs started to be fed. After a number of warmup moves from the Towcester backs they started to find space out side, James Snook receiving the ball at pace and in space, wrong footed his opposite number scoring in the right corner for an unconverted try. Tows went into the offensive again and 5 minutes later the backs found similar space with Snook scoring a second, this time evading a number of tackles and going in under the posts, quickly converted by Callum Garwood. Casuals came back strongly trying hard to re-assert their up front strategy. Off the back of a scrum Casuals scrum half pressured Tows no 9 who spilt the ball which was snaffled up by the Casuals 9 who had a straight dash to a converted try. This was followed by a period of ill discipline from the the Tows forwards leading to a slotted penalty and a yellow card for Paddy Falvey taking one for the team. The last five minutes of the first half the depleted home team managed to cling on with some indomitable defence close to their line. Half time score 14-17 to the visitors.
The second half saw Tows step up with some early pressure Callum Garwood and Alex Chalcraft looking dangerous outside, despite being a man down they were able to turn early pressure into a 5 pointer, Wing Liam Shackley finding space powering over in the top corner, making the score 19-17. Casuals continued to battle on and with 8 minutes to go a penalty was converted to make the score 19-20. A nail biting finale ensued with several Tows attacks snuffed by desperate Casuals defence. With minutes to go No8 George Raven broke off the back of a scum opening a gap on the right, he managed to scrabble a pass out to Alex Chalcraft who tumbled over the line with three defenders attached. The conversion did not stick but this was enough to bring Tows a hard fought win at 24-20.
